What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is based on the theory that bio-electric energy (Qi) flows through the human body along channels known as meridians. The meridian channels connect all aspects of the body into one network of energetic communication. In eastern medicine the free flow and internal balance of this energy is seen as essential for good health. Exposure to subtle yet prolonged, or more immediate intense situations whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual, can cause a restriction or blockage affecting the flow and balance of this energy. This disruption in balance then ripples through the system, affecting areas of the body and causing symptoms which manifest as a range of conditions. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis aims to determine the underlying cause of the condition. Acupuncture, alongside other TCM treatments are then utilised to treat the cause, and this in turn affects the condition.

How does it work?

In Acupuncture very fine needles are inserted just below the surface of the skin on specific acupuncture points which are located along the meridian channels. The TCM practitioner manipulates the needles to stimulate the flow of energy. This improves blood circulation and boosts the immune system. Vital energy and essential nutrients flood affected areas of the body nourishing and revitalizing cells and organs. Essentially acupuncture and other traditional Chinese medicine techniques aim to enable the flow of energy (Qi) and this in turn facilitates the body’s own healing mechanism. This is why acupuncture is so effective at treating such a wide range of conditions.

The WHO (World Health Organisation) supports the use of acupuncture treatment with, alongside and for conditions such as cancer, arthritis, anxiety, fertility, pain, migraine and many more. As more studies are conducted into the healing benefits of acupuncture so greater weight is being added to it's proven effectiveness.
