Ding Chuan Wan (Anti-Asthma Pills)

Functions: Descends rebellious Lung Qi, transforms phlegm, clears heat, calms wheezing and cough

Description:
Ding Chuan Wan is a classical formula from the Yi Fang Ji Jie (Analytical Collection of Medical Prescriptions), traditionally used for cough and wheezing due to combined external wind-cold invasion and internal phlegm-heat obstruction in the Lung.

Common indications include:

  • Wheezing with thick yellow sputum

  • Cough with chest tightness or shortness of breath

  • Laboured inhalation and smooth exhalation

  • Sensation of heat or fever with chills

  • Symptoms worsening with exertion or at night

Ingredients (Standardised):

  • Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) – disperses wind-cold, stops wheezing

  • Bai Guo (Ginkgo Semen) – astringes the Lung, calms asthma

  • Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) – clears Lung heat, stops cough

  • Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) – clears heat, dries dampness

  • Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen) – descends Lung Qi

  • Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) – redirects Qi downward, dissolves phlegm

  • Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) – transforms phlegm

  • Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos) – moistens Lung, stops cough

  • Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix) – harmonises the formula

Traditional Indications:
Used for wheezing and cough with phlegm-heat in the Lungs, especially following or during unresolved external attacks. Supports acute and chronic patterns where phlegm obstructs the Lung Qi.

Usage:
Pills to be taken with warm water, typically 2–3 times daily. Dosage and duration should follow practitioner guidance based on TCM diagnosis.

Contraindications:
Not suitable for dry cough due to Yin deficiency or for cold-type asthma without phlegm-heat signs. Not for long-term use without professional supervision.
