Weight Loss

Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine for Weight Loss & Control

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) takes a different approach to weight loss than we do in the west. Weight fluctuation  is not just viewed as resulting from calorific intake. Instead it is recognised as an imbalance in the body due to a range of potential causes. Chinese Medicine takes a holistic approach to understanding the causes of weight gain. It can be caused slow or sluggish digestion, hormonal imbalance, poor circulation leading to stagnation, thyroid disfunction, emotional upset, stress and more. TCM diagnosis will aim to understand the cause of weight gain and then create a treatment plan particular to each individual to restore balance in the body (digestive, hormonal, metabolic, circulatory etc) to best facilitate weight loss.

Improve digestion

Acupuncture can improve functions of the digestive system by using key stomach and kidney acupuncture points. Bloating, constipation and gastrointestinal  issues are associated with slow digestion and poor gut health. Improving digestive function  will have a knock on effect on the whole body, increasing energy levels, ensuring absorption of vital nutrients, reducing fat deposition and aiding in its elimination.

Re-balance Hormones to reduce appetite

If your  hormone levels are out of balance it can adversely effect normal functioning of internal systems, including digestive, metabolic, cognitive, immune etc. Acupuncture can manipulate hormone levels to benefit these systems. Ghrelin  is a hormone that tells the body it is hungry, and Leptin is a hormone which tells the body that its full. Acupuncture can help to reduce your appetite and reduce your desire to overeat with unnecessary snacking.

Boosts metabolism

One of the key areas of the body relating to metabolism is the pituitary gland. Acupuncture can help to increase metabolic rate  by stimulating the thyroid and endocrine glands in order to improve the body's effectiveness in burning calories during exercise and general daily activities. Affecting the endocrine system also helps to stabilize blood sugar levels.

Correct water retention.

Acupuncture can reduce excessive water retention in the body by stimulating the nerves of the kidney and endocrine systems enabling those with high levels of water retention to loose weight quickly and  keep it off.

Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation in the gut, muscles and tissues can slow down the metabolism and impact digestion. Acupuncture can reduce inflammation and help to regulate the immune system.

Reduce Stress

Stress is a fundamental component often overlooked as being one of the main contributors to weight gain. Prolonged stress raises levels of cortosil, a stress hormone, which causes the body to store instead of burn fat. Reducing stress, anxiety and tension in the body can have a fundamental effect on returning balance to the body's systems and allowing them to return to a normal healthy state.

As you can see from above acupuncture has many benefits for helping with weight loss, balancing and strengthening the body's internal systems which when combined with other TCM treatments, like herbs, exercise tips, diet advice and auricular acupuncture give you a gentle yet effective weight loss and control programme.

Consultation and Diagnosis

The first step is to diagnose the cause of weight gain and identify areas of the body that will most benefit from acupuncture and Chinese medicine. There is not much point pounding the pavements if you have sluggish digestion or hormonal imbalance as this not only could affect your ability to loose weight effectively but can affect your ability to keep it off. Diagnosis will take a range of lifestyle factors into account and will consist of a full tongue and pulse assessment. Our practitioner will advise you on the best treatment plan particular to your individual circumstances. We offer a Free Consultation and it should take no longer than about 15 minutes.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

Acupuncture and acupressure are the main form of treatments offered for weight loss in our clinics. For more information on both of these visit our Treatments page.TCM usually focuses on three main areas, the kidney, the spleen and the liver meridians. The kidney meridian relates to the endocrine system and facilitates re-balancing hormone levels and reduction of water retention. The spleen is treated to regulate sugar metabolism and the liver meridian is targeted to reduce stress and the effects of stress, as stress can lead to depleted hormone levels that are related to metabolism in the body The cause of weight gain, the length of time you have been overweight and a number of other factors will determine how many sessions of acupuncture our practitioner will recommend as part of our weight loss programme.

Exercise

We will incorporate some deep breathing techniques and some gentle exercises to compliment your treatment. The techniques we use will help to utilise energy channels (meridians) in the body to stimulate relaxation and digestion. They are very easy exercises based on the Tao and Qi gong and will naturally assist the body by improving circulation, kick starting stagnant energy, building core strength and returning the body to balance.

Diet

Traditional Chinese Medicine and food intake go hand in hand. Hippocrates famous quote, 'let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’ is prevalent in Chinese Medicine practices. The best diet for weight loss consists of eating simple foods, those that are easy to digest and are high in nutrients.

For weight loss to be sustainable it must fit in with your current lifestyle. Small, yet sustainable changes over time are better than dramatic short term changes that are difficult to keep up. We will give advice on which foods may be beneficial to you and which to avoid based on each individuals particular diagnosis.

Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular acupuncture has gained acceptance in the last number of years after a number of studies were conducted that showed weight loss following auricular therapy.  The ear is one of the densest areas of our body for nerve endings that are linked throughout the body. It is one of the various micro-systems of the body which contains all points relating to all major organs and body parts. Before leaving our clinics our practitioners will place small seeds into specific acupuncture points on your ear. Pressing these points at particular times throughout the day can help curb cravings, aid digestion, and reduce hunger.

Herbs

Chinese Herbs are very effective and can work in numerous ways to aid weight loss including, increasing metabolism, stimulating the digestive system and fat elimination. They are most often prescribed as an accompaniment to treatment because the Chinese medicine practitioner will know which herb will be most effective in relation to your particular condition. We also sell specific blends of Chinese tea and make our own weight loss teas in our clinics using dried herbs. All our herbs are completely natural with no chemical constituents. For more information about our herbs visit our Herbal Remedies page.

Our programme is suitable for all men and women. Whether you are carrying a lot of extra weight, a small amount  or have weight gain without obvious cause, acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help
