Er Chen Wan (二陈丸, "Two Aged Herbs Pills") is a classical Chinese herbal formula first recorded in the Song Dynasty Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang. It is one of the foundation formulas of Traditional Chinese Medicine for patterns of "Phlegm" and "Dampness", and is often used as a base for other prescriptions.
 
Traditional actions (in TCM terms): dries Dampness, transforms Phlegm, regulates Qi and harmonises the Middle Jiao (the digestive system).
 
Traditionally used for:
A feeling of phlegm in the chest or throat, with a cough bringing up plentiful white, watery or frothy phlegm
A heavy, full or stuffy feeling in the chest and upper abdomen
Mild indigestion, queasiness or a poor appetite associated with Dampness
Feeling heavy, sluggish or tired in a Phlegm-Damp pattern
 
Ingredients: Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fu Ling (Poria), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix Preparata), with Sheng Jiang (fresh ginger).
 
How to take: follow the directions on the pack, or as advised by your practitioner. Not suitable for a dry cough without phlegm.
 
See your GP first if you have a cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood, chest pain, wheeze or breathlessness, palpitations, unexplained weight loss, or ongoing vomiting. If you have asthma or a heart or lung condition, keep taking your prescribed medicines. Seek urgent medical help if you are severely short of breath.
