Prostatitis is a general term for inflammation of the prostate gland.

Chronic pelvic pain syndrome( CP/CPPS) is the most common form of prostatitis.  It can last for  weeks or longer and it can recur numerous times during that period. Each time it flares up it subjects  men to symptoms such as painful ejaculation, , urinary frequency,  lower back pain,  difficulty starting urination, burning when urinatiing,  as well as penis and testicular pain.

The American Journal of Medicine evaluated the use of acupuncture versus sham acupuncture in men who had CP/CPPS. In the study, 89 men were arbitrarily assigned to undergo either actual or sham acupuncture two times per week for a total of 10 weeks. Each session lasted 30 minutes. Subsequent to the 10-week study, 32 (73%) of the 44 men who had real acupuncture responded positively, compared with 21 (47%) of the 45 men in the sham group. The findings were based on reactions to the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index [NIH/CPSI].) Also, 14 (32%) of the men who had real acupuncture still showed positive signs six months after completing the study, compared to only 6 (13%) in the sham groups.

The Malaysian Study in conjunction with the University of Washington Department Of Urological Surgery. In this study  90 subjects randomised into two groups and treated withacupuncture and sham acupuncture twice weekly for 30 minutes for 10 weeks. They then followed the patients for an additional 24 weeks. They found that acupuncture was twice as effective as sham acupuncture for the primary endpoint (73% vs. 48%, p=0.02) at 10 weeks, that more acupuncture patients had complete resolution of symptoms (18 vs. 10, p=0.07), and that acupuncture recipients had a greater long-term response 20 weeks after completing therapy (32% vs. 13%, p=0.04).
