Acupressure Points for Immunity

Acupressure, a technique derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), involves applying pressure to specific points on the body to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote overall well-being. By stimulating certain acupressure points, you can support and strengthen the immune system. Here are some key acupressure points for boosting immunity:

Large Intestine 4 (LI4 or Hegu):

  • Location: On the highest point of the muscle between the thumb and index finger, in the middle of the second metacarpal bone's radial side.

  • Benefits: Relieves pain, reduces inflammation, and supports the immune system. It is also useful for alleviating headaches, fever, and constipation.

  • Caution: Pregnant women should avoid stimulating this point as it can induce labor.

Large Intestine 11 (LI11 or Quchi):

  • Location: At the lateral end of the transverse cubital crease, at the midpoint of the line connecting LI10 (Shousanli) and the lateral epicondyle of the humerus.

  • Benefits: Clears heat, reduces fever, and supports the immune system. It is also helpful for treating colds, flu, and allergies.

Lung 7 (LU7 or Lieque):

  • Location: On the radial side of the forearm, 1.5 cun proximal to the wrist crease, between the tendons of the brachioradialis and abductor pollicis longus muscles.

  • Benefits: Strengthens the body's defensive Qi, supports the immune system, and helps alleviate cough, asthma, and sore throat.

Stomach 36 (ST36 or Zusanli):

  • Location: On the anterior aspect of the leg, 3 cun below ST35 (Dubi), one finger-width lateral from the anterior crest of the tibia.

  • Benefits: Strengthens the body's Qi, supports the immune system, and aids in digestion. It is also useful for treating fatigue, weakness, and gastrointestinal disorders.

Spleen 6 (SP6 or Sanyinjiao):

  • Location: On the medial side of the leg, 3 cun above the tip of the medial malleolus, on the posterior border of the tibia.

  • Benefits: Tonifies the spleen, supports the immune system, and promotes blood circulation. It is also helpful for treating digestive disorders, gynecological issues, and insomnia.

  • Caution: Pregnant women should avoid stimulating this point as it can induce labor.

Kidney 27 (KI27 or Shufu):

  • Location: In the first intercostal space, 2 cun lateral to the midline, on the lower border of the clavicle.

  • Benefits: Benefits the lungs, supports the immune system, and helps alleviate cough, asthma, and chest tightness.

Bladder 12 (BL12 or Fengmen) and Bladder 13 (BL13 or Feishu):

  • Location: BL12 is located 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the second thoracic vertebra (T2). BL13 is located 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the third thoracic vertebra (T3).

  • Benefits: Clears heat, supports the immune system, and helps alleviate cough, fever, and common cold symptoms.

To stimulate these acupressure points for immunity:

  1. Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down.

  2. Locate the desired acupressure point using the descriptions above.

  3. Using your thumb, index finger, or middle finger, apply firm, steady pressure to the point. You may feel some tenderness or discomfort, which is normal.

  4. Hold the pressure for 1-3 minutes, focusing on slow, deep breaths.

  5. Release the pressure gradually and repeat the process on the corresponding point on the other side of the body (if applicable).

  6. You can stimulate these points several times a day to support your immune system.

Always consult a healthcare provider or a licensed TCM practitioner before trying acupressure if you are pregnant or have any medical conditions.
