Boost your Immune System with Chinese Medicine

Updated: Aug 28, 2023

By focusing on restoring balance within the body, Chinese medicine strengthens our natural defenses. Acupuncture, herbal remedies, and dietary adjustments all play a role in promoting harmony and resilience. They can help by improving circulation, regulating energetic imbalances in the body and stimulating the bodys signalling chemicals such as hormones and neurotransmitters.

In Chinese medicine qi (pronounced chi), is the vital life force energy that has many different roles in the health of our body. Three forms of chi that can help our immune system protect us from outside attack are:

1.Wei Chi is your outer defense mechanism or a protective 'energy' blanket. In TCM a large part of our immune system depends on a strong Wei Chi. According to TCM, a virus will be more likely to enter the body if there is a deficiency in the lung and spleen meridian(energy channel) This is because in TCM the function of the lung in the body is to protect the skin. Chi runs around the skin, helping our circulation and protecting our body. ‘We’ means protection, so the energy protecting our outer body is called ‘we chi’. This energy acts to prevent any outside attacks from viruses or bacteria from entering the body.

2.Ying Chi is the energy we get from nutrition. Good nutrition is essential for a good immune system. From a Chinese medicine perspective eating foods that are grown locally and correspond with the seasons is still the most natural and healthiest way to intake food. Chinese medicine focuses on the energetic properties of food and categorizes them by the actions they have on our body. When we help a system physically, we also help it energetically. By eating the right type of foods for the season we are helping to keep the natural dynamic flow of Qi (energy) in balance.

3. Yuan Chi is a mix of energy that comes from the kidneys and activates the liquids and the essence of our blood. This keeps our healthy oxygenated circulation system running smoothly. A healthy circulation system is essential for good health. Good circulation ensures blood cells in your immune system will be transported around the body as needed.

Chinese Medicine treatments including acupuncture, acupressure and herbal remedies are used to boost the immune system by restoring balance to the body. Modern lifestyles including poor diet, lack of exercise or sleep and stress related conditions can all throw the regulatory systems of body out of balance. Chinese medicine can restore this balance enabling the immune system to do its job more effectively. In fact the premise of Chinese medicine is to the enable the body to heal itself.

Chinese medicine treats every person individually as an imbalance can be caused by a range of factors particular to each person.
